Are you living with GERD?
July/August 2005

Do you suffer from digestive irritation following meals?

Have you been diagnosed with having heartburn or acid reflux?

Have you been diagnosed with GERD?

Are you tired of having this pain dictating what you can eat and enjoy?

Are you tired of this pain affecting your “after-meal time”?

Are you currently taking prescription medication for acid reflux or GERD?

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Research indicates that up to 44% of otherwise healthy adult Americans suffer from heartburn at least once a month. Approximately 7% of the population experience heartburn as often as once a day. The incidence of GERD increases markedly after the age of 40, and it is not uncommon for patients experiencing symptoms to wait years before seeking treatment.

Besides the discomfort of heartburn, reflux can cause other symptoms of esophageal inflammation, such as odynophagia (pain on swallowing) and dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). The acid reflux may also cause pulmonary symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, asthma, aspiration pneumonia, and interstitial fibrosis; oral symptoms such as tooth enamel decay, gingivitis, and halitosis (chronic bad breath); and throat symptoms such as a soreness, laryngitis, hoarseness, and earache.

You may not have to live with this pain any more.

Gastro-esophageal reflux is both a normal occurrence in the general population and an abnormal occurrence that can result in mild to severe symptoms. Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can be described as any symptomatic condition or change in tissue structure that RESULTS FROM the reflux of stomach or duodenal contents into the esophagus.

Heartburn, a burning sensation or discomfort behind the breastbone or sternum, is the most common symptom of GERD. It may be accompanied by regurgitation of undigested stomach contents into the mouth or the lungs. In people with significant GERD, manifestations such as asthma, coughing, or intermittent wheezing and vocal cord inflammation with hoarseness can occur.

Acid reflux is most often the result of the body’s inability to properly digest food. If this reflux is allowed to continue, it will begin to cause more severe symptoms and can even lead to tissue damage in the esophagus.

Complications of allowing GERD to continue include esophageal erosion, esophageal ulcer, and esophageal stricture (narrowing); replacement of normal esophageal tissue with abnormal tissue; and pulmonary aspiration. If you allow the acid reflux to continue, you are at risk of developing more serious symptoms that can cause damage to your digestive tissues.

Factors that may increase the symptoms of GERD in some patients include smoking, caffeine, chocolate, fatty foods, overeating with gastric distention, tight clothing, the presence of a hiatal hernia, and certain medications. While avoidance of these factors may be helpful, there is relatively little data supporting the efficacy of lifestyle modification alone for the treatment of GERD.

Why?

Because the cause of the acid reflux is not being corrected.

It is necessary to determine WHY the reflux is occurring, and then address this problem. The routine treatment for the symptoms of GERD is a medication prescribed to decrease the acidity of the gastric fluids. Sometimes this will decrease the symptoms to the point that they become tolerable, but with time, these symptoms will in fact WORSEN and the medication will not be effective. You see, acid reflux is not caused by having too much digestive acid, but by too little. Because of this, it is possible to completely ELIMINATE the discomfort of GERD using natural methods instead of medications.

Acid reflux and the associated symptoms of GERD shouldn’t control your life. Treating patient after patient has clearly demonstrated that it isn’t necessary to suffer another day of the burning and pain of acid reflux.

Once the cause of your reflux has been determined, it may be possible to eliminate most of your reflux symptoms in as little as a few days and completely eliminate the pain and irritation in less than a month. Great success has been achieved using a specific system of alternative therapy that involves nutritional evaluation and natural methods of correcting the problem of acid reflux.
